Pleasant surprise!

It was surprising for me to notice more girls in this school than boys! I’m glad the rural population in India has started giving more importance to educating girls. And I was also impressed by the efficiency of teachers to multi-task and teach two grades in the same classroom while there was a shortage of teachers.

  1. I was a volunteer at ASER (Annual Survey of Education Report) this year, and I was surprised to see more girls at than boys at all the schools I went to!
Then, when the actual survey began and we started going to each and every house, we realized why that was. Even the poorest of families ended up sending their boys to proper English medium schools(and pinning all their hopes on them), while the girls ended up in the free, (sarva shiksha abhiyaan based) govt. schools :(

Edit: corrected typos. And added a link.

  2. Although I would be very happy about this ‘change’, like Sasidhar says, there might be more than what just meets the eye…

Its a picture of hope though…
