With the Philosophy of “Learning by Doing”, Vigyan Aashram has developed a curriculam for one subject, which focuses more on activity rather than theory. This subject called as IBT (Introduction to Basic Technology) is now taught in more than 100 rural schools across Mahashtra.

Jute

Women in a remote village of Assam extract Jute fibres from the stem of the jute plant. Freshly cut stems are soaked in water for about 15 days, so that the coarse outer-covering on the stem becomes soft and then the fibres can be extracted easily. Interestingly, India is the world’s largest jute growing nation!

Students of Vigyan Ashram have put together this interesting work, using discarded parts of a motor-bike. Vigyan Ashram is a unique school, especially for rural India, where importance is given to practical learning. Here, students are taught subjects like agriculture, plumbing, carpentry, animal husbandry, welding and other such skills which would empower them to set up their work-stations in villages.

The rains this year have been very encouraging and the Meteorology Department has given a very positive forecast. This kid, along with many other farmers in India are expecting good harvest season to be back again.

V Valley

Rightly so this is called the V Valley. This Valley is part of Khasi hills, Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, untouched and beautiful, permanently cloudy. Precisely why this state is called Meghalaya, which literally means “The Abode of Clouds”.

People from his village claim he’s nearing 120! And he does most of his daily chores, like taking cattle out for grazing, all by himself! The day I visited their village in West Bengal, there were some celebrations going on, and he took the lead on the dance floor!

These kids were punished and thrown out of the school premises.. While the other kids were studying something boring in the classroom, these kids were surely enjoying waving out to the vehicles that passed by their school gate..
